A Journey Through AI's Rise to Humanlike Intelligence

Victor del Rosal, author of Disruption: Emerging Technologies and the Future of Work (#12 on BookAuthority's Best Technology Trends Books), takes readers on a journey through the development of AI—from its early beginnings to the rise of humanlike intelligence systems that emulate our most treasured abilities: creativity, language, and reasoning. With a blend of technical insight and philosophical reflection, HUMANLIKE presents a balanced view of the opportunities and challenges ahead, urging businesses, leaders, and individuals to prepare for a future where AI is not just a tool but a partner in human progress.

Why HUMANLIKE?

Humanlike
/ˈhjuːmənlaɪk/
Adjective

An entity, object, or behavior that shares certain attributes typically associated with humans, even if the entity is not human itself.

When I saw the I, Robot movie in 2004 it never occurred to me that I was watching anything but sci-fi. Fast forward a few years and humanoid robots like the Atlas by Boston Dynamics blur the line between science fiction and science fact.

As I wrote Disruption: Emerging Technologies and the Future of Work in 2015 it did not seem possible for AI to write essays and poems, generate images, code in virtually any programming language and do everything else that generative AI is capable of; I was convinced that creativity was off-limits for AI.

After tinkering furiously with ChatGPT for a month or so, it happened; I realized I was not dealing with a toy or niche technology. I got an intuition of genAI's transformative potential and while it's not human, it is eerily close: humanlike intelligence we can converse and create with.

I noticed a pattern in people's reactions: they spanned from fascination to terror (or both). Some would get emotional or even upset. Then it hit me: we are interacting with a technology that can deal in arguably our two most precious currencies: intelligence and language, allowing it to produce outputs once exclusive to human minds. The thought that something could emulate such cherished capabilities, that define us as a species, was difficult to process.

Questions This Book Explores

  • What is the likely impact of humanlike AI to enhance decision-making, drive innovation, and boost productivity while maintaining ethical standards?
  • What are the broader societal, ethical, and regulatory implications of AI systems that can think, learn, and adapt like humans?
  • What transformative role will humanlike AI play across industries, and how can individuals and organizations prepare for the evolving career landscapes?
  • Which skills might be valuable and in-demand in future job markets?

Praise from Business Leaders

"Victor is a tremendous speaker, with novel insights and a wonderful way of connecting to the audience. He taught a course for 5 days to a group of executives and directors focused on AI and GenAI. Victor did a magnificent job, balancing insights, deep expertise and novelty. It's fair to say that none of us were the same when we left the room."

"This is a wonderful book that lays out the background in a very interesting way, using parallels from the invention of hunting, through space flight. The writing is crisp and conscience, and the author lays out a bunch of frameworks that people and companies can use to determine where and when to apply AI. For a subject as difficult to fully comprehend, and one that changes so quickly, we need a map. This is that map."

Humanlike.... excellent!!!!

I just finished reading HUMANLIKE — How to Stay Human in the Age of Intelligent Machines, and it's definitely worth checking out. The coolest part? The way it explains complex AI concepts like "hAI" in a way that's easy to follow. The level of detail gives a solid foundation for anyone wanting to go deeper into the topic. Plus, the practical applications presented encourage you to think about how these ideas could work in real-world scenarios.
